National Intermediate & Masters XC 2025 (9th Feb)
The beautiful grounds of Westport House in Co. Mayo was the venue for the National Intermediate & Masters Cross Country on Sunday 9th February. A challenging course was laid out on parkland alongside the Carrowbeg River, compromising some gradual inclines, tight turns and lots of flat but mucky ground.
Mullingar Harriers was well represented in the Masters Women 4,000m race with ten athletes on the start line. Sinead Whitelaw ran a strong race over the undulating course, finishing well up a fine 19th place. Next home was Aisling Corcoran who worked her way through the course to finish strongly, ahead of Maura Dervan also finishing strong to place just outside the individual medals, 5th in her master age category. Next to finish was Linda Cunningham, closely followed by Caroline Mullen. Following them in was Naomi Battle, Claire Lennon Gavin, Kelly Dunne, Brigid McCabe and Pauline Troy who all worked well together during the race. Brigid put in a fantastic run to win gold in her master age category, a well-deserved victory and adding another National title to add to her already impressive collection. In the 4,000m for Masters Men o/65, Nicky McCabe had a good run and was very satisfied with his performance on the National stage. The Master Men 7,000m saw Eddie Newman take bronze in his master age category, with Paddy Daly having a good run finishing close behind.
With the masters races finished, attention turned to the Intermediate Women 5,000m where Mullingar Harriers was very well represented by Susan Glennon who was in the mix from the start. Susan worked hard throughout the race to stay in contention and finish a brilliant 6th place. Conleth Mullen rounded out the Club action when he put in a strong performance in the Intermediate Men 8,000m to round off his cross country season [SW].
