CISM World Military XC 2024 (18th Dec)
Ian McCormack, the Club’s men’s captain, was delighted to make his International debut and help the Irish Army men team to third place and the bronze team medals at the CISM World Military Cross Country Championships in Schaffen, Belgium on Wednesday 18th December. The event was run over a very hilly and difficult cross country course and attracted teams from over 50 countries. In very windy but dry conditions, athletes faced two laps and an extended finish straight, covering 9,600m. With the Irish team packing well towards the front of the field they were always in contention for a podium finish. Ian was happy with his own run and there was added joy to a first International vest to see the team results showing Ireland in third place.
Adding to the link with Mullingar Harriers, the manager of the Irish team, Comdt. Noel Conway, started his military career in Mullingar. He joined Mullingar Harriers and was a regular with the club for a period of time while stationed at Columb Barracks in the town.
Congratulations to Ian on making a successful debut. Representing Ireland for the first time is a huge milestone for any athlete and is well deserved for Ian. Now that Ian has made his International debut, his name will be added to the International Roll of Honour in the Clubhouse, the one hundred and twenty eighth name on the marble wall plaque.
