Christmas greetings to all members and friends of Mullingar Harriers

The officers of the Club extend Christmas greetings to all members and former members of the Club, particularly those who have returned home to Mullingar for Christmas. Also to the very many people who helped in any way during the year, especially our sponsors, the local press, all our volunteers, our grounds staff for all their work maintaining the Clubhouse and grounds and to the Principal and Board of Management of Mullingar Educate Together National School for the use of their car park on training nights.

Leinster Star Awards for 2017

Athletics Leinster recently announced the winners of the Leinster Star Awards for Westmeath for 2017. Based on the results in Leinster Championships in 2017, the award winners for Westmeath are Mullingar’s Vicky Harris (senior athlete) for the fifth year in a row, Shauna Leydon (juvenile girl) and from North Westmeath AC, a joint award to Darragh Gaffney and Conor Fogarty (juvenile boy). This is the second year that Darragh has received this Award. Also winning an Award for the second year is Niamh Fogarty (North Westmeath AC) who will receive the Throwers Award for Leinster.

Vicky won gold in the 200m outdoors and bronze in the 60m indoors and Shauna won gold in the outdoor discus and indoor shot and silver in the outdoor shot. Two Leinster titles each for Conor and Darragh, indoor and outdoor shot for Conor and indoor shot and outdoor discus for Darragh earned them the juvenile boy’s award. The indoor shot underage Leinster title with a new Championship record and the senior outdoor discus title for Niamh Fogarty makes her a very worthy winner of the throwers award. These well deserved awards for performing at a consistently high level throughout the season will be presented at a Gala Dinner in the Bridge House Hotel in Tullamore in January.

After the hugely successful cross country season where Mullingar won ten of the eighteen Club titles in cross country, there’s no surprise that our juvenile athletes retained the Morrissey Cup for best juvenile Club in cross country in Leinster. This marks seventeen years in a row for the best Club, so congratulations to all our underage athletes that played a part in this success. The cup will also be presented in Tullamore.

Annual General Meeting

The Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held in the Annebrook Hotel, Mullingar on Friday 19th January at 8pm. We hope see all our adult members attend and also the parents of the very many underage athletes who receive training, coaching and guidance throughout the year. The meeting will take about an hour and a half and we urge everyone to show your appreciation of the work being done at the Club by attending the AGM. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Selections for January Internationals

After a very long cross country season that extended from September right up to the week before Christmas, our squads are currently on a very well earned break, but not so for Jamie Battle and Caoimhe O’Brien who will be competing in the Antrim International Cross Country in January, which incorporates the Celtic Cross Country. Jamie will compete on the Irish Junior team and Caoimhe will compete with the AAI Development team in the u/18 competition.

Membership for 2018

As we head into the New Year, members are asked to please renew their membership as soon as they can. If you’re not registered, you’re not insured and can’t train at the Club or take part in Club competition. We’ll be holding a few registration renewal nights at the Club in January to encourage early renewal, details in the coming weeks, but membership can be paid any night at training. Rates are unchanged from 2017. We’re introducing a new attendance system in January and paid up underage members will be issued with an electronic wristband that can be read by a smart phone, so they will be checked-in to training. They must wear the wrist band to training sessions or they will not be allowed to take part.
