International Selection for Jessica Cunningham

Congratulations to Jessica Cunningham on her selection to compete at the inaugural World Deaf Youth Games to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil next week. Next year, the Deaflympics (the Deaf Olympics) will be in Tokyo and these World Youth Games will provide excellent experience for those athletes targeting Tokyo. Jessica’s selection comes on the back of all the hard work she has put in at training over the past number of years and it is a great honour for Jessica, her family and for Mullingar Harriers. Everyone at the Club wishes Jessica the very best of luck in Brazil.

A question some might have is why are the Deaflympics not in the Paralympics? The answer is that if deaf athletes were to compete in the Paralympic Games, then numerous sign language interpreters would be required to bridge the communication barrier, otherwise the deaf athletes would be completely separated from all other athletes, losing the very purpose of the Games which is to bring athletes together.

Notice of Annual General Meeting

The Club’s Annual General Meeting takes place in the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar on Friday 26th January at 8pm. We hope to see all our adult members attend and the parents of the many underage athletes who receive training, coaching and guidance throughout the year. The meeting will take about an hour and a half and we urge everyone to show your appreciation of the work done at the Club by attending the AGM. There will be light refreshments served after the meeting.

Open day for membership for younger members

Membership for younger members age 8, 9, 10 and 11 years of age this year will be taken at the open day on 20th January only. Membership for these young girls and boys will be taken on a first come first served basis and when the groups are filled, we’ll take no more. Memberships for the youngest members will only be taken at the open day and cannot be done online and they will return to training in early February.

Membership for 2024

Thanks to those others that have paid their membership for 2024 already. Membership can be paid online though the Club’s website or any evening at training if more convenient. The handiest way to pay is online and the online system is now open for everyone (except those aged 8, 9, 10 and 11 years of age) to pay their membership for 2024. It’s important to pay as soon as possible so you are insured to train at the Club and of course to enter the many indoor, road and cross country events that will take place in the coming weeks.

Fit 4 Life

A new 10-week Fit 4 Life programme commenced this week (Monday evening). If you missed the first night, don’t worry, you can still register next Monday evening from 6.45pm at the Clubhouse. Our all-weather track will be the focus over the next 10 Monday evenings, with participants, many starting out or just returning to running, having the encouragement and support of our trained coaches each night.

Check the Club’s website at www.mullingarharriers.com or its Facebook page for all the latest news.
