Irish Universities T&F 2017 (7th/8th Apr)

Vicky Harris (AIT) 100m BRONZE

The strong winds on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th April made for quite difficult conditions at times at the Irish Universities T&F Championships, which were held at Cork IT.

Vicky Harris (AIT) cruised comfortably through her heats of the 100m and 200m on Friday afternoon and in the finals on Saturday was very pleased to take third in the 100m, a bonus being a new PB of 12.32 seconds, which she ran into a stiff headwind of 2.1 m/s, so there’s plenty more fast times to come in more favourable conditions. Despite running a new AIT record of 25.13 seconds in the 200m final, again into a headwind, Vicky was pushed into 4th place. She had little time to rest though and played her part in the AIT 4x100m relay team that placed 6th and the 4x400m team that placed 7th in an AIT record of 4:12.59. The points accumulated by Vicky helped AIT to finish third team overall in the women’s competition.

Elizabeth Carr (DCU) also took a bronze medal, in the 1,500m on Friday, finishing in 4:40.48 and very close to the silver medal. She was back in action again on Saturday in the 3,000m where she finished strongly in fourth and earned valuable points to help the DCU women’s team win the team title. Competing for IT Sligo, Moya Leydon finished out of the medal places in the discus but was happy to have thrown an IT Sligo record of 27.23m.

Also competing in Cork was Johnny Daly (UCD) where he finished well up in the 5,000m on Saturday in 16:28.26, just ahead of Andy Nevin (IT Blanchardstown) who had also competed in the 10,000m on Friday where he finished an excellent 8th place.
