AAI Indoor League Round 2 – Guest Events (23rd Jan)

Round 2 of the AAI Inter-Club Indoor League took place in Athlone on Sunday 23rd January and as in Round 1, there were Open Guest Events on the programme to give some much needed early season competition. Taking advantage was a number of athletes from Mullingar.

The 800m was a fast and furious race and was exactly what the two Mullingar Colin Smiths needed and they took full advantage. Working hard to keep in touch with the leading group Colin D Smith was very pleased with his time of 1:52.49 time, not far off his indoor personal best, but Colin P Smith hung on his shoulder and was absolutely delighted to finish in 1:52.69, which is a huge personal best by over two seconds and a massive step forward for him.

Charles Okafor opened his indoor season with two races over 60m. He was narrowly beaten in his heat in the first series but his best time of 7.04 seconds is only marginally outside his PB, so this was a strong opening race for Charles. He won his heat in the second series in 7.08 seconds, so is showing some good early season form and consistency.

Lorcan Mullen will be satisfied to place third in his heat of the 3,000m in 9:15.94 and it gives him a good gauge of where he is in training for the season ahead.

Shauna Leydon has been training very well over the winter and competed in the 400m. Despite a cautious first lap, Shauna still won her heat very easily in 60.83 seconds but knows that a more aggressive opening lap will see her dip well under 60 seconds and she will benefit from more races over the distance.
