AAI Indoor Games 2017 (5th Feb)
The AAI Indoor Games were held in the superb new National Indoor Arena in Abbottstown on Sunday 5th February, giving some Club members an early opportunity to test the new track. First into action for Mullingar Harriers was Sean McMullin in the 3,000m race walk where he showed good early season form and completing the distance in 17:14 to claim sixth position in the race.
In the 3,000m Cormac Dalton transferred his excellent cross country form onto the track when he finished in a PB of 8:53. Jack Moran was also in action is the next 3,000m and he also completed the distance in 8:53, which was a PB by two seconds. Jamie Battle was next in 9:04. These three junior athletes were using this track race to sharpen their fitness for the upcoming Leinster Schools cross country where they can be expected to feature prominently.
In the 800m races, Colin Smith was first into action. Having finished fourth in the National Junior 800m the week before Colin was hopeful of a strong performance. Colin took the lead in his race on the last lap and looked set to win but inadvertently got clipped on his heels by another athlete. This forced Colin to settle for sixth place in a time of 1:58, which was excellent given the tactical nature of this race. Oisin Quinn and Paddy Kelly were very competitive also and will benefit greatly from these races as the indoor season progresses.
